Set in the backdrop of the Vembanad Lake, located about 16km from the city of Kottayam, this sleepy town is a cluster of little islands famous for backwater tourism in the Kuttanad region. This small town was once ruled by the king of Thekkumkur which had a lot conflict between the local kings and provinces. Vembanad lake was considered as a dangerous area which small kings looking to attack central Travancore with their small boats called chundan vallam and veppu vallam. Prone to such attacks the king of Thekkumkur kept his soldiers to oversee and prevent any attacks. Coming to the climate of this town, it enjoys a moderate climate throughout the year due to which this place has a wide variety of flora and fauna. It is home to the famous 'Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary' which hosts many migratory birds from the world such as the Siberian Storks.
