One of the most fascinating places to visit in Sri Lanka is Sigiriya. A fortress perched upon a rock that rises 200 metres above the ground, Sigiriya rock fortress is the town’s main attraction. Built for King Kassapa, the place derives its name from a sculpture of an enormous lion that used to gate the fortress and it means “Lion Rock”. Situated between the towns of Dambulla and Habarane, Sigiriya is a short 45 min drive away from Dambulla.
At the bottom of the rock, there are water gardens, cave and Boulder gardens and terraced gardens. These gardens are some of the most ancient gardens and add to the grandeur of the place. As you climb up the rock you’ll see numerous colourful frescos that decorate the sides of the rock. On reaching the peak on can see the remains of the palace and stunning view of the forests that surround the rock. It’s no wonder that the ancient city of Sigiriya is a UNESCO world heritage site.
